The Upper Room

In February of 2020 I heard the Lord say the word “North”. This was as I was driving home from a class at a church in a small town 30 minutes north of where I live. I pondered it some & felt God was saying I would be going north for a season. This was still before Covid hit so I really had no reference with which to judge this idea. It wasn’t on my radar so I just tucked it away for future reference, thinking maybe it just meant for the duration of this class. Then as Covid hit & churches began closing down indefinitely the “north” came again as I travelled north to this church for worship, as they were the only ones open. At this point I still didn’t really think much of the word “north” except to think that this is probably what God meant.

This morning I was reading & meditating on the Upper Room experience of the disciples. I wonder if they were waiting for a person to show up or if they understood God was going to send His Spirit to live in them? Either way the amount of expectation and anticipation in that upper room had to be palpable. Jesus gave them a specific command, WAIT and God will do a great thing. No time frame was given, they are just told to have faith, obey His commands, and rest in His peace (John 14).

As I started making a list of all the symbols related to the Upper Room, my Spirit began to soar and words that were spoken over me in 2019 began to make sense. Things that God has been speaking into my heart in this season have also fallen into place.

Definitions are according to God’s Prophetic Symbolism in Everyday Life by Adam Thompson & Adrian Beale.

Upstairs: Heaven, Presence of God, place of prayer, renewal, rest, God’s plans & thoughts

Upper Room: spiritual place, Heaven, spiritual thinking

Up: Spiritually strengthened

North: place of God’s Throne, moving into your spiritual inheritance, literally going North physically

Room: chambers of the Heart

Throne: authority, place where God reigns

So here’s my heart on this. The Upper Room is a place where God’s Presence meets His people & empowers them (Acts 2:1-4; 4:31). It is not a place for nonchalance, discouragement, complaint, murmuring, apathy, or unbelief. It is a place of intention, of waiting but not idleness, a place of expectancy, wonder, excitement, anticipation, & hope. It is a place of perseverance & faith. A place where we hold on to the promises of Jesus, of God’s Word. A place where we shut out the noise of the world, social media, & news and focus on God alone. We worship. We let go. We move into the presence of God. By ascending, going upstairs, entering the upper room, we enter into the very Throne Room of God. It is here that we move into our spiritual inheritance!

When God was calling me north, He was calling me to Himself, to His Throne Room, into my inheritance. He brought me into a place where His people were already seeking Him in this way. I believe there are physical places where God’s door is wide open for us to come up. When we come together in these places, & worship & seek Him in His true identity as Authority & Power, when we enter God’s Throne Room, we can’t help but shake the atmosphere around us. As His bride we become bold, we step into our true identity, we understand the authority & assignment given to us. Salvations, healings, miracles & wonders break out wherever we go. God is doing great things!

There has been a dark, heavy cloud hanging over the earth this last year. It has brought despair, depression, fear, confusion, & much chaos. God is calling His people to break through it into the Heavens. He’s opened His door. He is calling us UP, calling us NORTH, calling us into His Presence, into the very room where He reigns!

So despite what things look like in the natural, we know God is still on His Throne, still pursuing relationship with us, still working things for our good & still using the crazy things of this world to bring glory to His Name. Things are not as they seem. Like the disciples in the upper room, we are waiting for something extraordinary that only God can do. We are to wait on Him, worship, pray, persevere, have faith in His Word & continue to come up into His presence. We are to hold each other up, encourage one another. Do not let the enemy steal what God has put before you. Enter into His room, into His Presence, into His Kingdom. When we get God’s perspective, everything changes, we change.

Did you notice the definition of room? The Chambers of the Heart. When we enter into the rooms of God, we enter into the chambers of His heart. He takes us right into His very being. There is no greater place to be.

Praise the Lord!

Psalm 145:10-13

10 All your works praise you, Lord; your faithful people extol you. 11 They tell of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might, 12 so that all people may know of your mighty acts and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.

13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations.

The Lord is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does.
